China Tourism Industry Statistical Bulletin255
Introduction
The tourism industry is a significant contributor to China's economy, accounting for a substantial portion of its GDP and providing employment for millions of people. In recent years, the industry has experienced rapid growth, driven by factors such as rising incomes, increased leisure time, and improved transportation infrastructure.
Domestic Tourism
China has a vast and diverse domestic tourism market, with over 6 billion domestic tourist trips made in 2019, a 10.3% increase from the previous year. Domestic tourists spent a total of RMB 6.63 trillion (USD 987 billion) during their trips, up 11.9% from 2018.
International Tourism
China is also a major destination for international tourists. In 2019, it received 145.3 million international tourist arrivals, a 2.9% increase from the previous year. International tourists spent a total of RMB 131.2 billion (USD 19.4 billion) during their visits, up 3.5% from 2018.
Key Findings
* Growth in Domestic Tourism: Domestic tourism expenditure increased by 11.9% in 2019, driven by factors such as increased disposable income and improved transportation infrastructure.
* Diversification of Domestic Tourist Destinations: Domestic tourism is no longer concentrated in a few major cities, with emerging destinations attracting a growing number of tourists.
* Increased Spending on Experiential Tourism: Chinese tourists are increasingly interested in experiential travel, such as cultural tours, rural tourism, and adventure activities.
* Impact of COVID-19 on International Tourism: The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on international tourism in China, resulting in a decrease in arrivals and spending.
* Government Support for Tourism Industry: The Chinese government has introduced various measures to support the tourism industry, including tax breaks for tourism businesses and investments in infrastructure.
Outlook for the Future
The long-term outlook for the Chinese tourism industry remains positive. The growing middle class, expanding transportation networks, and government initiatives are expected to continue to drive growth in both domestic and international tourism. However, the industry will need to adapt to new challenges, such as the impact of technology and the increasing importance of sustainable tourism practices.
