My Korean Boyfriend‘s Hilarious Chinese Learning Journey: A Vlog150
Annyeonghaseyo and Ni Hao everyone! Welcome back to my channel! Today's vlog is extra special because it documents my boyfriend, Junseo, on his epic journey of learning Mandarin Chinese. For those who don't know, Junseo is Korean, and while he's fluent in English and Korean, he's always wanted to learn Chinese. He’s been fascinated by Chinese culture for years, and now, finally, he's taking the plunge. This vlog will follow his progress, his struggles, his triumphs, and, most importantly, the hilarious moments that inevitably come with learning a completely new language.
We started this journey about two months ago. Junseo opted for a combination of methods – online classes, language exchange partners, and of course, immersion through spending time with my family. His initial attempts were… let’s just say charmingly clumsy. His pronunciation was… unique, to say the least. Remember that time he tried to order "jiaozi" (饺子 - dumplings) and ended up asking for "jiaaozi" (which sounds nothing like it and probably confused the poor waiter)? I captured it all on video, of course, much to his initial embarrassment, but now we both laugh about it.
One of the biggest challenges for Junseo, and probably for many Korean speakers learning Chinese, is the tones. Mandarin Chinese is a tonal language, meaning the meaning of a word changes depending on the tone used. Korean doesn't have tones, so this was a huge hurdle. We spent countless hours practicing the four main tones – high, rising, dipping, and falling – and even tried using tone-based apps and games. It was frustrating at times, but Junseo persevered with his characteristic determination. The funny thing is, he started associating certain tones with facial expressions, which made our learning sessions even more entertaining. A high tone meant a wide-eyed surprised expression, a falling tone a disappointed frown, and so on. It was a memorable (and effective) way to learn!
His online classes focused on basic grammar and vocabulary. He started with simple greetings and introductions, then moved on to ordering food, asking for directions, and describing everyday objects. He found the characters particularly daunting at first, but slowly he began to recognize patterns and learn how to write them. We even bought a calligraphy set, and he spent hours practicing his strokes, which often resulted in more laughter than perfectly formed characters. His determination, though, is admirable. He spends at least an hour every day practicing, even if it's just reviewing vocabulary or listening to Chinese podcasts.
The language exchange partners have been invaluable. He’s been paired with a native Chinese speaker who helps him with pronunciation and provides cultural insights. It’s amazing to see how much his fluency improves through these interactions. It's not just about grammar and vocabulary; it's about understanding the nuances of the language and the culture behind it. His partner has shared interesting stories about Chinese customs and traditions, broadening Junseo's understanding beyond the textbook. This cultural immersion is something I think is crucial in learning a language effectively.
Spending time with my family has also helped immensely. My parents were initially a bit hesitant, but they quickly warmed up to Junseo's enthusiastic attempts, even if he occasionally stumbled over words. They’ve been incredibly patient and supportive, and they’ve even started teaching him some regional dialects and slang, which has added a whole new dimension to his learning. They've also introduced him to traditional Chinese games and dishes, further immersing him in the culture. Seeing him struggle, but never give up, has been inspiring for all of us.
Of course, there have been many, many funny moments. There's the time he accidentally called my grandmother "老太婆" (lǎotàipó - old woman), which is certainly not the most respectful term. He meant to say "奶奶" (nǎinai - grandmother), but the tones were off. Or the time he tried to describe a beautiful sunset, but ended up using words that meant something closer to a fiery inferno. We've got hours of video footage documenting these hilarious mishaps. It's a testament to the challenges of learning a new language, but also a reminder that learning should be fun.
Two months in, Junseo's progress has been phenomenal. He can now hold basic conversations, order food confidently (no more jiaozi mishaps!), and even understand some TV shows with subtitles. He still makes mistakes, and he’s still learning, but his passion and dedication are undeniable. It's incredibly inspiring to witness his commitment and perseverance. This vlog isn't just about documenting his language learning journey; it's also a celebration of his effort, his humor, and his love for Chinese culture.
So, stay tuned for more updates on Junseo's Chinese learning adventure! We'll keep you posted on his progress and, of course, share more of the hilarious moments along the way. Don't forget to like and subscribe to follow our journey. And if you have any tips for learning Mandarin, please share them in the comments below! 감사합니다 (gamsahamnida - thank you in Korean) and 谢谢 (xièxie - thank you in Chinese)!
