Exploring China: A Myanmar Student‘s Travelogue91

My name is Ma Su Su, and I'm a student from Myanmar currently pursuing my undergraduate degree in International Relations at Peking University. While my academic life in Beijing keeps me busy, I’ve always made time to explore this fascinating country. China, with its rich history, diverse cultures, and stunning landscapes, presents an endless source of wonder for a student from a relatively smaller and geographically different nation like Myanmar. This travelogue documents my personal experiences exploring various parts of China, highlighting the similarities and differences I've observed between my homeland and this vast Asian giant.

My first major trip was to Xi'an, the ancient capital. The Terracotta Army, a breathtaking testament to the power and artistry of the Qin Dynasty, left me speechless. The sheer scale of the project, the detail in each individual warrior's face, it felt almost surreal. Comparing it to the historical sites in Bagan, Myanmar, I noticed a striking difference in the preservation techniques. While Bagan’s temples bear the marks of time and nature’s weathering, the Terracotta Army, despite its age, is impressively preserved, a testament to modern conservation efforts. This highlighted for me the contrasting approaches to historical preservation in our two countries.

From Xi'an, I journeyed south to Guilin and Yangshuo. The karst landscape, with its iconic limestone peaks rising dramatically from the Li River, is unlike anything I'd ever seen in Myanmar. The lush greenery, the misty mountains reflecting in the calm waters, created a picturesque scene straight out of a painting. I opted for a bamboo raft ride, a peaceful and meditative experience, far removed from the bustling city life of Beijing. This trip emphasized the natural beauty of China, a beauty vastly different from the plains and Irrawaddy delta landscapes I’m accustomed to in Myanmar, yet equally captivating.

My exploration of Chinese culture extended beyond the natural wonders. I visited several bustling markets in various cities, a common thread connecting my experiences in both Myanmar and China. The vibrant atmosphere, the chaotic yet organized energy, the constant bartering – it felt remarkably familiar. However, the sheer scale of some of these markets, like the Silk Market in Beijing or the night markets in Chengdu, was overwhelming. The variety of goods on offer was also staggering, showcasing the depth and breadth of Chinese manufacturing and production, something Myanmar is still developing.

Food, of course, played a central role in my explorations. While Myanmar cuisine is rich in its own right, with its emphasis on coconut milk, seafood, and flavorful curries, Chinese cuisine offered a whole new world of tastes and textures. From the spicy Sichuan dishes in Chengdu to the delicate Cantonese cuisine in Guangzhou, I discovered a remarkable diversity within Chinese culinary traditions. The emphasis on fresh ingredients and regional variations was captivating. I even attempted a few cooking classes, learning to make dumplings and other traditional dishes, a memorable experience that bridged cultural gaps.

Beyond the major tourist hotspots, I also ventured into smaller towns and villages, gaining a deeper understanding of everyday Chinese life. I witnessed the dedication of farmers tending their rice paddies, the warmth of locals inviting me into their homes for tea, and the vibrancy of community life in small villages. These experiences provided a stark contrast to the fast-paced urban life of Beijing, offering a more intimate glimpse into the heart of China. These personal interactions reinforced the understanding that despite significant cultural differences, human connection transcends geographical boundaries. The hospitality I received mirrored the warmth and generosity I experience in Myanmar.

My travels across China have also highlighted some of the key differences between the two countries. The sheer scale of China's infrastructure, from its high-speed rail network to its vast highway systems, is truly impressive, something Myanmar is actively striving to develop. The technological advancements in China, particularly in areas like mobile payments and online services, are also significantly ahead of Myanmar’s current capabilities. The emphasis on family, the strong sense of community, and the deep respect for elders are values that resonate strongly with my own upbringing in Myanmar.
