However, Mark's learning style required a more interactive approach. We began with simple phrases: "ni hao" (你好, hello), "xie xie" (谢谢, thank you), and "bu ke qi" (不客气, you're welcome). These became our daily mantra, interspersed with much laughter and many failed attempts at proper pronunciation.

I tried explaining the concept of sentence structure, but Mark often looked at me with a glazed expression. So, we switched tactics.
