Befriending a Chinese native has been an enriching experience, but it's not without its hilarious moments, especially when your bestie tries to grapple with the intricacies of the Chinese language.

Take, for example, her valiant attempt to ask for a "bottle of cold water" at a convenience store. Instead, she uttered, "我要一瓶开水," which to a Chinese person means "I want a bottle of boiling water." Let's just say she got an earful from the cashier and swiftly corrected her Mandarin.

Another memorable incident occurred during our culinary escapades. Eager to impress me with her newly acquired vocabulary, she confidently ordered "青蛙下蛋" at a restaurant. Imagine our surprise when a bowl of frog eggs arrived at our table! The poor girl had confused "frog legs" (田鸡) with "frog eggs." Our laughter echoed throughout the dining hall as she sheepishly explained her misunderstanding.

But perhaps the most memorable slip-up was when she was trying to describe her recent trip to a temple. She intended to say, "我去了很多寺庙," which means "I visited many temples." However, due to a slight mispronunciation, she ended up saying, "我去了很多死庙," which translates to "I visited many dead temples." We couldn't help but chuckle at the unintended comedy.

Despite these linguistic hiccups, my bestie's enthusiasm for Chinese has remained unyielding. She often attempts to recite Chinese poems, albeit with amusing results. Her rendition of "静夜思" (Silent Night Thought) is particularly memorable, with its unique emphasis and creative interpretation. I find it hard to keep a straight face when she belts out, "床前明月光，疑是地上霜。举头望明月，低头思故乡" (By my bed shines bright moonlight, I mistake it for frost on the ground. I raise my head to gaze at the moon, I lower my head to think of my hometown). Her enthusiasm, though misplaced at times, is endearing and contagious.
