Domestic Tourism Hard Hit

Domestic tourism in China, which accounts for the vast majority of tourism revenue, has been particularly hard hit by the pandemic. Tourism Revenue Plummets

The decline in domestic and international tourism has led to a sharp drop in tourism revenue in China. According to the China Tourism Academy, the total revenue generated by the tourism industry in 2023 is expected to reach 2.82 trillion yuan ($426 billion), down by 24.7% compared to 2022. This decline has had a ripple effect on the entire tourism value chain, including hotels, restaurants, airlines, and travel agencies.

Gradual Recovery on the Horizon

As China gradually eases its COVID-19 restrictions and reopens its borders, the tourism industry is expected to start recovering. However, the pace and extent of the recovery remain uncertain and will depend on a number of factors, including the global spread of COVID-19, the effectiveness of vaccines, and consumer confidence.

Analysts predict that China's tourism industry will not fully recover to pre-pandemic levels until 2025 or later. In the meantime, the tourism sector will need to adapt to the new realities of travel and find innovative ways to attract and serve visitors.
