China Tourism 2015: A Year of Record-Breaking Growth164

China's tourism industry experienced a record-breaking year in 2015, with inbound and outbound travel both hitting new highs. According to the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA), inbound tourism reached 133.6 million visitors, an increase of 4.6% over the previous year. Outbound tourism also surged, with 120.2 million Chinese traveling abroad, a rise of 10.2%. This growth was driven by a number of factors, including rising incomes, increased leisure time, and more relaxed visa restrictions.

Domestic Tourism

Domestic tourism continued to be the mainstay of China's tourism industry in 2015, accounting for over 90% of total travel spending. The CNTA estimated that domestic tourism revenue reached 3.2 trillion yuan ($510 billion), up 9.2% year-on-year. This growth was driven by increased travel by Chinese tourists to popular domestic destinations such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen, as well as by the growing popularity of short-haul travel and weekend getaways.

Inbound Tourism

Inbound tourism to China also saw strong growth in 2015, with the number of visitors from overseas reaching a record high of 133.6 million. This growth was driven by a number of factors, including the Chinese government's efforts to attract more foreign visitors, the launch of new direct flights from overseas destinations, and the increasing popularity of China as a tourist destination. The top source markets for inbound tourism to China in 2015 were South Korea, Hong Kong, the United States, Japan, and Russia.

Outbound Tourism

Outbound tourism from China also experienced strong growth in 2015, with 120.2 million Chinese traveling abroad, a rise of 10.2% year-on-year. This growth was driven by a number of factors, including rising incomes, increased leisure time, and more relaxed visa restrictions. The top destinations for outbound tourism from China in 2015 were Thailand, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Singapore.

Outlook for 2016

The outlook for China's tourism industry in 2016 is positive, with both inbound and outbound travel expected to continue to grow. The CNTA predicts that inbound tourism will reach 140 million visitors in 2016, an increase of 4.8% over the previous year. Outbound tourism is also expected to continue to grow, with 130 million Chinese expected to travel abroad in 2016, a rise of 8.2%.
